Discover Lake Bogoria: A Journey with Our Expert Guide Ben

The picture you're looking at is of our vastly experienced tour guide, Ben. Ben knows all the spots, and he recently returned from a trip to Lake Bogoria, where he led a group of our non-residential tourists to experience one of the world’s natural wonders.

If you went through Kenya’s 8-4-4 education system, chances are you learned about Lake Bogoria in geography class. And if you were lucky enough to visit, you probably even tried to boil an egg in the hot springs — a popular activity at the site.

This natural marvel, tucked away in the Great Rift Valley, is more than just a classroom memory. Lake Bogoria is an adventure waiting to happen.
 Why Visit Lake Bogoria?
1. Flamingos
One of the main highlights of Lake Bogoria is the presence of thousands of lesser flamingos that flock to the lake. The lake's high alkaline levels create the perfect environment for spirulina algae, the flamingos’ primary food source. The sight of these pink birds in their thousands along the shoreline is truly breathtaking and ideal for photography enthusiasts and nature lovers alike.

2. Therapeutic Hot Springs
Lake Bogoria boasts several hot springs and geysers along its shores. The hot water is rich in minerals and is believed to have therapeutic properties, making it a natural spa for visitors. You can enjoy the bubbling geysers, though it's important to remember that the water can be dangerously hot.

3. Wildlife Haven
Apart from the flamingos, Lake Bogoria is home to a variety of wildlife. The surrounding Lake Bogoria National Reserve houses species such as zebras, impalas, buffaloes, and occasionally leopards. Birdwatchers will find the area fascinating as it hosts over 300 bird species.

4. Unique Geological Features
Lake Bogoria sits along the Rift Valley fault, making it geologically significant. The fault has led to geothermal activity, causing the formation of natural geysers that erupt periodically. Visitors can also enjoy the breathtaking views of the Lake Bogoria Escarpment, which provides a dramatic backdrop to the shimmering lake.

Things to Do at Lake Bogoria
1. Bird Watching
Lake Bogoria is considered one of the best places in Kenya for bird watching. Besides flamingos, you can spot pelicans, ostriches, storks, and hornbills. The lake's calm waters create stunning reflections, perfect for wildlife photography.

2. Exploring Hot Springs
The hot springs and geysers are among Lake Bogoria's most fascinating features. You can watch geysers erupt and even boil eggs in the hot springs for fun (though caution is required). The natural geothermal activity creates a surreal experience for visitors.

3. Nature Walks and Hiking
The surrounding landscape offers excellent opportunities for hiking and nature walks. You can hike up to the Rift Valley escarpments, providing panoramic views of the lake and its surrounding plains. The nature trails also give you the chance to encounter the area’s unique flora and fauna.

4. Camping and Picnicking
Lake Bogoria is also ideal for camping enthusiasts. The peaceful environment and picturesque scenery provide the perfect backdrop for an overnight stay in nature. The camping areas are well-maintained, making it a popular spot for families and adventure seekers alike.

Best Time to Visit
The best time to visit Lake Bogoria is during the dry season (June to October and January to February). During these months, the water levels are lower, and the flamingos are present in large numbers. The weather is also cooler and more pleasant for exploring the outdoors.

From its vibrant flamingo population to its bubbling hot springs and rich wildlife, there’s so much to explore. Whether you're a first-time visitor or revisiting the lake, Ben will make sure you uncover all its hidden gems.
